I’m not going to start telling you to throw away everything in your medicine cabinet. Just read.
February 13, 2021 – Let me start off by saying that I am not a “cult” all-natural holistic health kind of girl. I take Advil when in pain, and I gladly accepted the epidural during labor. When I disinfect, I reach for bleach, ethanol or isopropyl before I’d reach for tea tree oil. However, there are essential oils that have actually helped me with relaxing my mind, headaches, sore muscles and relieve a minor asthma attack.
Soothing and Clearing My Mind With Aromatherapy
Essentia oils are concentrated and have a potent aroma. Essential oils are extracted from plants through distillation and have an aroma similar to the characterisitics of the plants they come from.
Experts think aromatherapy activates areas in your nose called smell receptors, which send messages through your nervous system to your brain.
The oils may activate certain areas of your brain, like your limbic system, which plays a role in your emotions. They could also have an impact on your hypothalamus, which may respond to the oil by creating feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin.– WebMD.com
The essential oils that best soothes and clears my mind are: lavendar, spearmint, mint, eucalyptus and frankinsense. I inhale their aroma by using a diffuser which uses distilled water + essential oil to create cloudy, micro-fine mist like what a humidifier does (but do not use essential oils in humidifiers, because the oils can clog the humidifier over time). It fills my home with an aroma that soothes and clears my mind. Best of all, essential oils do not irritate my lungs like some toxic plug-in air fresheners.
When I have a headache, applying peppermint or rosemary essential oil (dilute with a carrier oil such as coconut oil) to my forehead, temples and the back of my neck at the base of my head to reduce my headache. I also rub it in my palms and cup my hands around my nose and mouth and inhale n order to release tension.
Soothing Muscle Aches
I’m a CAMTC certified massage therapist, and clients and I love essential oil in the massage lotion/cream. Lavender essential oil is the most requested essential oil for massage. It helps soothe muscles while the aroma calms the mind of both the massage therapist and client. In addition, essential oils with menthol (mint, spearmint, eucalyptus) and rosemary essential oil are very soothing to the muscles. Just don’t apply directly to the skin without a carrier. It takes about 30 minutes for the essential oils to be absorbed by the skin and enter the blood stream. Therefore, it’s best not to wash off the lotion/cream for 30 minutes (assuming you are not allergic or irritated by these essential oils).
Minor Asthma Attack
I was having a minor asthma attack one day, and my emergency inhaler was empty. I used eucalyptus essential oil in my diffuser and inhaled the fine mist through my mouth and nose. My airway eventually opened and I was able to breath, again! Thank goodness!
Few Other Uses
There are so many more essential oils to experiment with. Some can be consumed (like lemon essential oil and mint essential oil) and some cannot. I’m not going to recommend anyone to consume essential oils, but I do consume lemon and tangerine essential oils in my water, and I use spearmint in my coffee (also tasty for chocolate shakes). I do this purely for taste. Adding essential oil to hot liquid can lessen the beneficial effects of the oil.
Well, there are so much more to read online about essential oils. I’ll let you Google more. Happy oiling!
